Paul Saik, Vocalist and Pianist - Recording Artist from Nashville, TN returns in concert at St. Paul

Nationally celebrated Nashville recording artist Paul Saik returns to Ocean Springs on Sunday, Mar. 8, at St. Paul United Methodist Church’s two campuses. A vocalist and pianist, Saik will be in concert during the 11 a.m. worship service at the East Campus, and 3 p.m. at the downtown campus.

A native of Jackson, Miss., Saik began playing piano at age 3 and spent much of his time performing in church. His first church position came at the age of 13 as the church pianist at First Baptist Church in Pearl, Miss. He quickly developed a love for church music and started playing the organ at age 16.

Saik studied piano and organ at Mississippi College and received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano, winning several awards and competitions. He also studied abroad at the University of London. A Pressar Scholar, Saik furthered his education at Baylor University, where he received a Masters of Music degree in church music and organ.           Mary Elizabeth Sawyer, St. Paul UMC director of music, said the church is very excited to have Saik return in concert and that the public is welcome to attend. “His passion is leading people in worship, and his music has touched many people, as he has performed in numerous churches throughout the country,” she said. “His concerts are a unique journey through his life as he performs various styles, but all leads to his desire to bring comfort, guidance and the presence of God to each listener.”

A versatile singer, Saik has performed with opera companies throughout the United States and around the world. But after many years of performing on some of the biggest stages in the world, Saik realized that the successes of his career could not outweigh the stresses and challenges that he faced every day.

“In the summer of 2003, I felt God’s call back to my first love…sacred music,” he said. “I was happy doing opera, but it did not satisfy my soul. However, God did use it to prepare me for where I am now. It made me realize that as much as music provides happiness for me, that only God could provide the happiness that I had lost.”

Saik has recorded seven CD’s: “I Choose Jesus,” “One Silent Night,” “Songs Of Inspiration,” “Love, Mercy & Grace,” “Live from Brentwood,” “Hymns of Inspiration,” and “Remembrances.”

Admission is free. A love offering will be collected for Saik, who has waived his professional fees for each event. This is his second appearance at St. Paul’s. The downtown campus is located at 800 Porter St.; East campus is on the corner of Highway 57 and U.S. Highway 90 (Bienville Blvd.) For more information, call the church office, 228-875-5701.

 St. Paul UMC offers community

‘A Night in Bethlehem’ experience

St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ocean Springs is preparing a special hands-on Holy Land experience for Wednesday, Dec. 3, 5-7 p.m. at its East Campus.

“The come-and-go event, ‘A Night in Bethlehem,’ helps us begin the Advent season leading to Christmas remembering why we started celebrating to begin with,” said Associate Pastor Leanne Burris.

Characters in Biblical costumes will roam about telling the story of the young family from Nazareth who have just given birth to their first child, a son. Experiences of the feel, taste, sound and smells of what life was like at this miraculous time will be created for those attending.

“We may even get a peek at the baby!” Burris said. “Live animals, authentic food, music, and games that children would have played the year Jesus was born will transport the family back to that amazing night when God became man and lived among us for a little while.”

While there is no admission fee, a donation of $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-10, and $18 maximum per family is suggested. The event is open to the public. Additional information may be obtained by calling the church office, 228-875-5701.

St. Paul’s East Campus is located on the southwest corner of Highways 90 and 57.

Preparing to begin a unique panel discussion on the subject of “Peace” at St. Paul UMC in Ocean Springs on May 4, 2008 were, from left, Dr. Judy Lytle, Mary Bayne, Fariha Siddiqui and Moody Grishman

St. Paul UMW creates unique conversation

on ‘Peace' from viewpoint of three religions

Shalom Salaam Peace, three words which mean "peace" from the three Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity and Islam—provided the topic for a panel discussion at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ocean Springs on May 4.

Organized by Nancy Wilson, St. Paul UMW president, the panel was a culmination of the Peace Circle’s current UMW spiritual growth study on the subject of peace. “The study teaches that each of the three traditions has a history of neighbors living at peace with neighbors and urging its followers to seek inner peace,” Wilson said. “Each tradition also has a history of violence which cries out for explanation.”

The panelists discussed barriers to peace and also the signs of hope that peace might be obtained. They also took questions from the audience. Moderator was UMW member Mary Bayne of Ocean Springs. Forty people attended the event sponsored by St. Paul’s UMW Peace Circle at the church’s East Campus.

Representing the three religions were: Judy Lytle, of Ocean Springs, a former Christian missionary and retired scientist from the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab; Milton Grishman, of Biloxi, a real estate broker, community leader and an active member of the Beth Israel congregation on the Gulf Coast, and Fariha Siddiqui, a Muslim, who shared her experience of living in two different countries, Pakistan and the United States, and of those two different cultures.
